You Bought a 4K TV? What Will You Do With It?

I love technology. Well, let me be more specific, I love tech toys. Whether it is an iPad, smartwatch, or HOTAS flight stick I have a real weakness for buying the latest and greatest in technology. I will probably be the first in line to buy an Oculus, even though I think they are pretty silly. Well, I have had a 73” Mitsubishi DLP TV for the last 5 years and I am looking to upgrade to something shiny and new and have been hit with a dilemma. Every company is pouring all of their new ideas into 4K televisions and I am sure they are fantastic. But, there isn’t any content out there for it. So, why should I buy a 4K TV?

Before you all line up to scream at me, I am aware that PC games can be turned up to incredibly high resolutions. That is something that does appeal to me pretty significantly. But, I am looking for something that screams to me why the 4K standard matters. They can’t even bundle the TVs with a Blu Ray to show off the crazy resolutions because Blu Ray players don’t support 4K, yet. The first 4K Blu Rays aren’t going to hit the market until late ’15. This year at CES all of the talk was on 8K TVs and how some of the biggest Hollywood filmmakers are already shooting in 8K. What do you think the odds are that 4K may become the DVI to 8K’s HDMI and get skipped over entirely? Let’s face facts, your Mom finally has a 1080p TV. She isn’t upgrading for a while. So, there is a good chance that if adoption of the format lags too much, 4K could become a vaporware standard in no time.

Have you upgraded to 4K TV? If so, what are you doing with it? Are the PC games super bad ass? Please sell me on this in the comments. I kind of need a new TV. Well, I kind of need a TV. Alright, I don’t need a TV, I just really want one.
